*02.11.1755 Vienna - †16.10.1793 Paris, France
Queen of France
Archduchess of Austria
Maria Antonia, later known as Marie Antoinette, was the youngest daughter and 15th and penultimate child of Maria Theresia. In 1770, she married the French Dauphin Louis, later Louis XVI., King of France, first by proxy and later at the Palace of Versailles. She gave birth to four children, Marie Thérèse Charlotte, the Dauphin Louis Joseph Xavier François, Louis Charles and Sophie Hélène Béatrice.
During the French Revolution, she was executed by guillotine in 1793. Initially buried in a mass grave near the Church of La Madelaine, her remains were later exhumed and identified by a garter, after which they were transferred to the Basilica of Saint-Denis.
Maria Antonia (Marie Antoinette) is buried alongside her husband Louis XVI. in Saint-Denis, the abbey church of the town of Saint-Denis, 10 km north of Paris. French kings and queens have been buried in Saint-Denis Cathedral since the 10th century.
