Detail from a photograph of Regina (1925–2010) by Karl Winkler. Dated 1958.

Regina of Saxe-Meiningen

*06.01.1925 Würzburg, Germany  -  †03.02.2010 Pöcking, Germany

Princess of Saxe-Meiningen

Regina was the only daughter of Hereditary Prince Duke Georg of Saxe-Meiningen and Klara-Marie, née Countess von Korff.

Regina grew up in a harmonious environment at Heldburg Castle in southern Thuringia with her two brothers. Her father, Duke Georg, was deported by the Soviets in August 1945 and died in Russian captivity. Duchess Klara fled to Bavaria with her daughter Regina.

Regina worked for Caritas in Munich and met Otto Habsburg in a home for Hungarian refugees. They married on 10 May 1951 in Nancy. The marriage resulted in seven children: Andrea Maria, Monika Maria, Michaela Maria, Gabriela Maria, Walburga Maria, Karl Thomas and Paul Georg.

Regina died in 2010 at her home in Pöcking and was initially buried in the crypt of Veste Heldburg in Thuringia. After the death of her husband Otto, Regina and Otto were transferred to Mariazell, where a solemn requiem was celebrated in the basilica. Both were then buried in the Capuchin crypt.

In accordance with her wishes, Regina's heart remained at Veste Heldburg.
